Making your website using micro soft word.

Write a document as normal.  To save it in html format, find the save as command and save the page as webpage.  If the document you created was the homepage, make sure you save this as index.htm  by going to save as and selecting webpage.  Webpages cannot have spaces or capital letters in their filenames.  Internet explorer looks for index.htm when searching out websites.  Once you have written your homepage, you will want to link to other pages on your website.  This is done via a hyperlink.  A hyperlink is a gateway or link to the other pages on your website.  Find the place where you want to place a hyperlink in your homepage, then press ctrl plus k.  this will bring up a hyperlink dialogue box.  There are a number of fields in this box, the first of which is an edit field where you can type the url of the webpage, if you know it, or you can type an email address if you want to create a send mail link on your page.

All files associated with your website, I.E. homepage, and content files, I recommend should be saved in one directory on your hard drive to aid retrieval.  The easiest way to link to another file on your computer is to press ctrl plus k, then tab along to the “file… button.  Press enter on this and a dialogue box, similar to the save, or save as dialogue boxes will appear, from which you can press enter on the file to which you wish to link to.

Tip.  When you have created a link, you will se the file name of the file you have linked to, E.G. mybook.htm.  it should be noted that any files to be saved in html format should have file names that have no spaces in them.  In some instances, the “mybook.htm”  will not be suitable, say if you want your website to seem more professional.  You combat this as follows.

Find the place where you wish to place your hyperlink, and type the words, “read my book!”  or whatever the file is you are linking to.  Highlight these words, then press ctrl plus k and find the file you wish to link to using the steps outlined above.  The link will then read “read my book!” rather than “mybook.htm.

Linking to webpages is easy, the only thing you need to bare in mind is that webpages are arranged in a chain, one links to another.  If that chain is broken, then the viewer of the website will get an error message.
