Setting up your own website.

Setting up your own website is quick and easy.  Before you do so, you will need information from your Internet Service provider, (ISP.)  Most of the information you will need is available from the customer pages section of the Home-page of your ISP.  The info you will need is:

  1. How much web space you have to use.
  2. What your ftp address is.  (this is the address of the server that holds the pages you upload to the internet.)
  3. How to register your website for other users of the Isp to be able to find you.
  4. How to register your website with other search engines.
  5. Where to get a web publisher.

Writing a web page.

Writing a web page is easiest in micro soft word.  Just create a document, write normally as you might write a letter.  Then save it in the following manner.

  1. go to file menu.
  2. find Save as.
  3. click on webpage.
  4. make sure the file name is index.htm.  This is essential for internet explorer to find the page.)
  5. change the title of the page by clicking change title.
  6. select the directory you wish to save the file in.  (for ease of use.  I recommend setting up one directory on your hard drive and saving all files connected with your website in that one directory.  Then you can upload the lot with little effort.
  7. click save.  The file will be saved in html format with the name index.htm.

adding links to other pages.

Most websites have more than one page.  Adding links to other pages in your own website and links to other peoples webpages is easy using ms word.  Below is an example of the kind of instance where you might want to set up a link to another page, followed by an example where you link to another person’s webpage.

Example 1.

If you want to read more about my book, please click:

Read about my book!

To set “read my book, up as a link.  Write the words as you would normally, then highlight them, click insert, then hyperlink.  Then link to the file where you had written a bit about the book.  You must have created another webpage using the steps above to do this.  Once the file is selected, then click on it.  The document will still read “Read my book” but that will be a link to the page about your book.  You can do the same thing from that page to link to the homepage again, just select index.htm.  instead of the page containing the book.

Example 2.

To link to another website.

Use the steps outlined above, but instead of linking to a file held on your computer, link to another webpage by typing in the URL.  URL is universal resource locator, also known as the web address, or web url.

This will then link to the other website.

To set up emailing links.

Do the same as for setting up other links, but type in your email address rather than typing in another web address or selecting a file from your hard drive.  Then a link to the surfer’s emailer will be created, allowing them to send you email.
